The Youth wing of Juntos pelo Povo (JJPP) has challenged the PSD/CDS Regional Government to establish a regional accommodation supplement for displaced Madeiran students. This initiative aims to address the financial barriers posed by increasing rental prices on the mainland, which hinder access to and continuation of higher education.
Alexandre Gomes of JJPP highlighted that current rental prices, particularly in Lisbon and Porto, are "completely out of control," placing an added financial burden on Madeiran families. The organization advocates for a progressive support system, taking into account family income and average rental costs in the cities where students pursue their studies.
JJPP argues that insularity already incurs additional costs, and access to higher education should not be determined by financial capacity. The proposal seeks to ensure territorial equity and equal opportunities, preventing any Madeiran youth from being limited in their academic pursuits by unaffordable housing expenses.
