Leonel Nunes, historic PCP leader and Madeiran trade unionist, dies

Leonel Nunes, a militant and leader of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP), has died at the age of 76. The party highlighted his "consistent commitment to the cause of workers, his political courage, and his capacity for political-union militancy in favor of building a more just society."

Nunes was a national leader of the PCP, serving on the Central Committee from 1992 to 2015. He was also a trade union leader in the hotel industry and a deputy in the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira from 1996, elected by the CDU. His career is marked by the connection between trade unionism and Madeiran regional politics after the Carnation Revolution.

The PCP recalled his long legal battle after being dismissed in 1978, related to his political-union activities. After approximately 18 years, the Hotel Reid's was forced to reinstate him in 1996, following a decision by the Supreme Court of Justice.
