The Lord Bom Jesus of Ponta Delgada, venerated in São Vicente, is one of Madeira's oldest and most significant religious devotions, symbolizing faith and tradition for the island's northern communities.
According to popular tradition, the image of the crucified Christ is said to have appeared off the coast of Ponta Delgada at the beginning of the island's settlement. This devotion led to the construction of the parish church, dating back to the 16th century. Despite a fire in 1908, the church was rebuilt and is now noted for its artistic richness.
Annually, on the first weekend of September, the parish hosts thousands of pilgrims for a festival combining religious services, processions, and the characteristic Madeiran 'arraial' atmosphere, keeping alive a centuries-old collective memory.
