Madeira Celebrates Intangible Heritage with Debate and Traditional Music

Madeira is celebrating International Day for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage with an event focusing on three regional cultural manifestations: Madeiran Paving (Calçada Madeirense), the Pilgrimage of São Pedro da Lombada in Santa Cruz, and the Ash Procession in Câmara de Lobos.

The gathering, themed "Intangible Heritage: Voices, Knowledge, and Practices," will take place at Torre do Capitão and features a panel discussion with representatives of these traditions to share experiences and discuss their significance and preservation. The event also includes a performance by the Xarabanda Musical and Cultural Association with their project 'Cantigas Cá de Dentro,' focusing on oral traditions and popular Madeiran music.

Regional Secretary for Tourism, Environment, and Culture, Eduardo Jesus, stressed the importance of safeguarding this living heritage, noting that its continuity depends on practice, appreciation, and transmission to new generations. The initiative concludes with a visit to the exhibition "Intangible Heritage: Knowledge that Inspires."
