Madeira has currently recorded more than 3,500 tonnes of grapes harvested. Nuno Maciel, the regional secretary for Agriculture and Fisheries, expressed confidence in the continuity of wine production on the island, despite the challenges facing the sector.
Maciel acknowledged difficulties related to the region's orography, climate change, real estate pressure on agricultural land, and the need for generational renewal among winegrowers. However, he dismissed a pessimistic outlook, stating his belief in the ability to transform and find solutions for the future of vineyards and Madeira Wine.
The regional secretary highlighted modernization, innovation, and product valorization as key pathways to improve producers' income and make the activity more appealing to younger generations. He emphasized that the sector's sustainability relies not solely on public support but on a combination of strategies involving collaborative efforts from all stakeholders.
