Madeira Ocean Expedition Studies Regional Marine Ecosystems for 28 Days

The waters around Madeira have become a scientific laboratory for most of October with the Madeira Ocean Expedition. The initiative, which began on October 2 and runs until the 28th, involves around 200 participants, over 10 vessels, and 34 national and international scientific institutions.

The aim is to study the Region's marine ecosystems, including areas around Madeira, Porto Santo, and the Desertas Islands, gathering crucial information to support the management and conservation of marine protected areas. The expedition employs various methodologies, such as scientific diving, drones, acoustic mapping, underwater cameras, and autonomous vehicles, to analyze biodiversity, habitat status, and environmental pressures.

Paulo Oliveira, coordinator of the Madeira Ocean Program, highlighted the operation's scale and collaborative spirit, thanking the involved entities and teams. João Canning Clode, from ARDITI, emphasized the technological and scientific component, underscoring the importance of collaboration with fishing communities. The expedition also includes participation from National Geographic Pristine Seas.
