The ADN Madeira party has requested clarification from the Regional Government regarding ongoing measures to prevent the overloading of the Meia Serra Solid Waste Treatment Station. In 2025, the station received approximately 150.4 thousand tons of waste, a 3.9% increase from the previous year. ADN recalls that in April 2026, RTP Madeira reported the facility had been operating at its capacity limit for two years.
The party deems it essential to understand the current operational capacity, the buffer for handling increased waste or equipment failures, the condition of the facilities, and contingency plans for high-pressure situations. ADN argues that public management should focus on preventing waste increases to avoid compromising the system, while acknowledging Meia Serra's role in treating and energetically valorizing waste from Madeira and Porto Santo.
ADN proposes that the Regional Government, in collaboration with Águas e Resíduos da Madeira (ARM) and local councils, present a public assessment of the regional waste system's capacity and sustainability. Requested clarifications include Meia Serra's current operational capacity, planned modernization investments, and the results of selective collection, recycling, and organic waste valorization initiatives.
