Scientific divers participating in the Madeira Ocean expedition have recorded greater biodiversity within the Garajau Nature Reserve than in a nearby unprotected area, highlighting the benefits of marine conservation.
Observations, conducted at depths of 10 and 20 metres at locations approximately one kilometre apart, indicate that the protected area, where fishing is prohibited, supports a wider variety of species, including groupers, and a more balanced mix of marine organisms compared to the unprotected zone subject to human activities.
The findings, which will assist policymakers in making decisions based on scientific information, were gathered through visual surveys and sample collection for further identification. The expedition utilized the vessel Santa Maria Manuela as its support base.
