Twenty years ago, on July 20, 2006, Diário de Notícias da Madeira reported on a controversy surrounding dress code rules for journalists at the Legislative Assembly of Madeira.
Several professionals were denied entry to the parliament for wearing trainers or T-shirts. The then-Assembly President, Miguel Mendonça, justified the decision by the need to uphold respect for the institution and announced the development of a specific regulation.
The incident drew reactions, with TSF-Madeira questioning the legality of the ban and the Journalists' Union calling the action "overzealous." It was also noted that neither the Assembly of the Republic nor the Azores Assembly had similar rules.
