Madeira's PSP Regional Commander, Superintendent Ricardo Matos, has highlighted the police's priorities in combating domestic violence, road accidents, and drug trafficking. These remarks were made during the 148th-anniversary commemoration of the Madeira Regional PSP Command.
Ricardo Matos reported approximately 6500 incidents of domestic violence in the region over the past 10 years, noting figures "worse" than the national average. Regarding road safety, last year saw over 4000 accidents, with eight fatalities recorded this year.
The fight against drugs was also emphasized as a "scourge," with the PSP aiming to "destroy supply sources." This year, over 100 searches were conducted, leading to more than 20 arrests for criminal activity, in addition to 19 suspects detained specifically in anti-drug operations.
