The Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Fisheries, Nuno Maciel, highlighted the importance of preserving Madeira's handicrafts as a living and dynamic sector, connected to new generations. This message was conveyed during the second edition of the Marathon of Arts & Crafts, promoted by the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute (IVBAM).
The initiative, which returned after a first edition in 2025, aimed to promote and value the region's traditional arts and crafts, allowing the public direct contact with artisans and their techniques. "We want living, dynamic handicrafts capable of attracting new protagonists, without losing traditional techniques and knowledge," stated Maciel, emphasizing the event's practical component with workshops and live demonstrations.
On this occasion, Artisan Cards were presented to six newly recognized professionals in various fields, including woodwork, basketry, knitwear, ceramics, and embroidery. The Region currently has 110 recognized artisans and 110 active artisanal production units. IVBAM is already planning new initiatives, including the Regional Handicraft Valorization Award in October and November, themed "Autonomy – 50 Years of History," and the Weaving and Tapestry Week at the end of October.
