Madeira's higher altitudes offer best conditions for August 12 solar eclipse viewing

Madeira's higher altitudes, above 1,100 to 1,300 meters, are expected to offer the best conditions for observing the solar eclipse on August 12.

The forecast from the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) indicates highly variable low cloud cover across the archipelago and adjacent sea.

However, there is a higher probability of the sky showing at least 50% low cloud cover in Porto Santo and some areas on the north and south slopes of Madeira island.
