The final night of Spring, between Saturday and Sunday, was the most tropical of the year on Madeira Island. Hours before the official start of Summer, five out of the 18 weather stations operated by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) on the island recorded minimum temperatures exceeding 20°C.
The highest reading was in Porto Moniz, with 21.1°C. Santa Cruz/Aeroporto and Funchal/Lido followed, both at 20.6°C. In Funchal/Observatory and Ponta do Sol/Lugar de Baixo, minimum temperatures stayed above 20°C, settling at 20.3°C. At the other end of the spectrum, Pico do Areeiro recorded the coolest dawn with 11.5°C.
A tropical night is defined as one where the minimum temperature does not drop below 20°C, a phenomenon more frequent during summer, particularly in coastal and lower-altitude areas.
