The University of Madeira's School of Health (ESS-UMa) has trained more than 850 general care nurses in the last 20 years, representing about 40% of the nurses currently working in the Region.

These figures were revealed by the Regional Secretary for Health and Civil Protection, Micaela Freitas, during the institution's 41st-anniversary celebrations at the University of Madeira. Established in 1985, ESS-UMa has expanded its training offerings, which now include bachelor's degrees and specializations in various nursing fields.

In addition to general care nurses, the school has trained around 225 specialists in areas such as Public Health, Maternal and Obstetric Health, Mental Health, Medical-Surgical Nursing, Rehabilitation, and Geriatrics. The institution is regarded as a benchmark for health professional training in Madeira, with regional, national, and international recognition.
