Madeira's Solar Eclipse: Less Drama Than Anticipated

Wednesday evening's solar eclipse occurred over Madeira with considerably less drama than many had expected, following weeks of anticipation.

At Pico do Areeiro, dozens of residents and tourists gathered near the Madeira Astronomy Observatory and Park, equipped with protective glasses. The Moon partially covered the Sun, briefly darkening the mountain, but the day-to-night transformation was fleeting and less dramatic than publicity had suggested.

Ponta do Pargo also attracted a considerable crowd, with numerous vehicles causing temporary circulation difficulties near the lighthouse. In Porto Santo, the event was barely noticed, with the island's golden light dimming slightly before 8 PM, but little sense of a major astronomical occurrence.
