Thirty-six years ago, the September 15, 1990 edition of DIÁRIO highlighted the international recognition of Madeira Wine. At the time, the island was preparing for fortified wines, with a special focus on Madeira, Port, and Sherry, to be the main theme of the 61st General Assembly of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), scheduled for the following year in Paris.
The decision to focus on Madeira Wine stemmed from a proposal by the Madeiran representation within the Portuguese delegation. The then regional secretary of Economy, Perry Vidal, emphasized the importance of the organization, which brought together around 60 producing and consuming countries.
The report also addressed concerns about imitations of Madeira Wine abroad, with Perry Vidal recounting the discovery of counterfeits and mentioning discussions with the US delegation regarding the misuse of the "Madeira" designation in California. The aim was to "impose the name Madeira" and ensure international respect for the region's wine.
