Two casks of 2021 Madeira Verdelho wine have returned to the Region after several months aboard the Sagres training ship. This initiative, promoted by the Regional Government through IVBAM, symbolically recreates the centuries-old tradition of 'Vinho da Roda' or return voyage wine, which involved crossing the Atlantic to subject the wine to the conditions of a long sea voyage.
The casks' journey was part of the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of American Independence, reinforcing Madeira Wine's historical connection to maritime routes and American history. The experience simulated the temperature and movement conditions faced by casks in past centuries, contributing to the wine's identity and international projection.
The uncasking of the casks, marking the culmination of the initiative and the reunion with this tradition, took place at IVBAM facilities in Funchal. The ceremony was attended by representatives of the Regional Government, the commander of the Sagres training ship, and the president of IVBAM.
