According to data from the Regional Statistics Directorate of Madeira (DREM), 36.5% of companies in the Autonomous Region of Madeira with 10 or more employees developed innovation activities in the 2022-2024 triennium. This figure represents a decrease compared to the 2020-2022 period, when the percentage was 41.6%.
Nationally, the percentage of companies with innovation activities also saw a decline, standing at 42.5% in the most recent period, compared to 44.7% in the previous triennium. Madeira has the second-lowest percentage of innovative companies among NUTS II regions, surpassing only the Azores. The Region also recorded the largest percentage reduction compared to the previous period, with a drop of 5.1 percentage points.
Regarding product innovation, 17.8% of Madeiran companies introduced new or improved products, a decrease of 4.6 percentage points. Process innovation covered 32.4% of companies, a reduction of 5.6 percentage points. In 2022, Madeiran companies invested 27.8 million euros in innovation activities, with 49.3% dedicated to internal research and development (R&D).
