A man has been arrested by the Public Security Police (PSP) in Caniço on suspicion of starting a brush fire. The incident took place on Rua Cônego Doutor Jorge de Freitas, near the slope of the New Cemetery.
According to Paulo Renato Baptista, coordinator of the Santa Cruz Municipal Civil Protection Service, the suspect allegedly threatened to set the area ablaze, citing family conflicts, before starting the fire. Workers from a company contracted by the Santa Cruz Municipality for fuel management pursued and detained the man until the PSP arrived.
Approximately 31 firefighters, supported by several vehicles and a helicopter, were involved in extinguishing the blaze. The suspect is expected to be referred to the judicial authorities.
