Maritime Police rescue 42 migrants off Greek island of Gavdos

Portuguese Maritime Police rescued 42 migrants from an inflatable boat south of the Greek island of Gavdos during a European mission.

Maritime Police personnel rescued 42 migrants off the Greek island of Gavdos as part of the "Joint Operation Greece 2026" mission, according to a statement from Portugal's National Maritime Authority (AMN).

The operation began at 07:08 local time after information was received about an inflatable boat roughly four nautical miles south of the island. All 42 people on board were men aged between 18 and 35, and none appeared to have health problems.

The migrants were taken to Karaves port with support from the Greek Coast Guard. The mission is coordinated by Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency. In October, the same force rescued 44 migrants off the same island.
