The Meia Serra Solid Waste Treatment Station (ETRS) received approximately 150.4 thousand tonnes of waste in 2025, a 3.9% increase compared to the previous year. This growth was primarily driven by energy recovery, with a 4.3% rise in waste sent for incineration.
Data from the Regional Directorate of Environment and Sea (DRAM) shows that 38.1 thousand tonnes were sent for recycling or recovery outside Madeira, a 2% increase. Notable rises included used cooking oils (+11%), scrap metal (+6.6%), paper and cardboard (+6.2%), and waste electrical and electronic equipment (+4.1%).
Conversely, the amount of tires sent for recycling decreased by 24.3%, and plastic waste and metal packaging fell by 16.2%. Within the region, waste recovery, including composting at the ETRS, amounted to 23.8 thousand tonnes, 13.7% less than in 2024, with construction and demolition waste accounting for 61.2% of this figure.
