Madeira and Porto Santo will gain a new fiber optic link next year, following a 4.5 million euro investment. This project by Emacom aims to improve the speed, reliability, and redundancy of communications between the two islands.
The new submarine cable will span 35 kilometers and include two fibers. The work, which involves trenching in Machico for the cable's beach landing and connection to a data center in Água de Pena, is expected to take another month. This new link will ensure Porto Santo's communications for the next 25 years, replacing an older, private infrastructure with lower capacity.
The project is also strategically important as it is ready to accommodate the Atlanticam, a new submarine cable system connecting the mainland, Madeira, and the Azores. Regional Secretary for Equipment and Infrastructure, Pedro Rodrigues, emphasized the fully public nature of the new infrastructure, crucial for Madeira's global connectivity and the public administration's data redundancy strategy.
