The University of Madeira (UMa), through the Madeira Botanical Group (GBM), is hosting a symposium on August 3rd at 4:00 PM in the Rectorate Building. The event is titled “Natural laboratories for evolution: the importance of collaborative research in identifying diversity on oceanic islands”.
The initiative marks the description of Madeirina (Asteraceae), a new genus for the flora of Madeira Island. It highlights the international scientific recognition achieved with this discovery and UMa's contribution to understanding Macaronesian flora.
The event will reflect on the role of oceanic islands as natural laboratories for evolution and the importance of collaborative research. The opening session will feature UMa Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Catarina Fernando and GBM Coordinator Prof. Dr. Miguel Sequeira. Presentations by national and international experts will follow, including an online contribution from John Grimshaw, Editor of Curtis’s Botanical Magazine.
