One in ten Madeirans care for dependent adults, above national average

One in ten residents in Madeira, aged between 18 and 74, provides regular care to dependent family members aged 15 or older. This proportion is higher than the national average of 7.1%.

The Regional Statistics Directorate of Madeira (DREM) reported that 30.9% of Madeiran caregivers dedicate, on average, 30 or more hours per week to this task, a percentage higher than the national average of 28%.

The study also shows that 23.1% of the Madeiran population in this age group cares for children under 15, a figure close to the national average. However, caring for grandchildren is less common in the region (3.7% compared to 5.2% nationally). Madeira also shows lower usage of childcare services, with only 41.8% using nurseries or similar facilities, versus 51.6% in the rest of the country.
