Only 10% of hotels in Funchal accept pets, placing Madeira's capital among Portuguese destinations with the lowest availability of such accommodation. These figures were compiled in a ranking by PriceLabs, based on hotels listed on Booking.com.
The study examined Portuguese cities with over 50,000 inhabitants and at least 100 accommodation units. Funchal ranked significantly lower than other cities more welcoming to travellers with pets, such as Alcobaça, which leads the classification with 51.28% of 'pet-friendly' hotels.
Portugal is the second EU country with the most dogs per capita, and over half of households own a pet, driving demand for hotels that welcome animal guests. However, availability varies considerably among tourist destinations.
