The Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) has reaffirmed its opposition to the Curral das Freiras cable car project, following news of progress on its construction. The party says the project is harmful to the public interest and raises financial and environmental doubts that remain unanswered.
On the financial side, the JPP points to a gap between the regional government's feasibility study, which forecast annual revenues above five million euros, and the initial fixed rent of two thousand euros a month in a 50-year concession, renewable for 10 more. Based on that study, the party estimates a loss of public revenue close to 24 million euros.
Environmentally, the public consultation on the RECAPE in May 2026 identified shortcomings in the assessment of biodiversity, including the Madeira firecrest, an endemic species listed as endangered. The JPP says convincing answers on these points have never been given.
