The Madeira Regional Section of the Order of Architects (SRMAD) has publicly clarified its position regarding the debate on multi-story building construction in the Region.
The Order emphasizes that it is "neither for nor against" such architectural solutions, instead advocating that each project should be analyzed according to its territorial context and applicable technical criteria.
The SRMAD notes that Madeira's orography can lead to construction at height or at lower elevations, and that it does not oppose any construction typology in a generalized manner. The Order defends values such as the right to affordable housing, quality in architecture, urbanism, environment, and landscape, trusting architects as the most qualified professionals to present the best technical solutions.
The statement points out that the discussion about 20-story buildings, initiated by statements from the Regional Government President, has escalated disproportionately, especially on social media, causing panic through false images, often AI-generated. The Order clarifies that what was stated is "support for good integration of all construction into the territory, including high-rise construction," but with the safeguarding of "a serious number of conditions" to be met before any decision.
