Portugal has recorded 66 cases of the clade Ib strain of the mpox virus during the latest six-week monitoring period, according to a World Health Organisation (WHO) report released today. The WHO indicated that community transmission of clade Ib has also been detected in several other European countries, including within sexual networks.
Spain has the highest cumulative number of cases in Europe with 241 infections, followed by France with 173 and Portugal with 162. A country is classified as experiencing community transmission when recent cases cannot be linked to travel or contact with travellers from affected countries. During the most recent period, Portugal reported 66 cases, the highest number among the European countries listed.
The most recent information from Portugal's Directorate-General for Health dates from May 31, 2025, at which time the country had recorded three mpox outbreaks since May 2022, involving 1,236 confirmed infections and two deaths. The WHO assessed the global threat of mpox as moderate, with new outbreaks continuing to emerge and over a thousand cases reported worldwide each month.
