The Socialist Party of Madeira (PS-M) has asked the Regional Government to calculate and make public the number of doctors and other healthcare professionals who will retire in the coming years. The aim is to ensure the replacement of retiring professionals, meet the needs of health centers, and plan for the transition to the new hospital.
Projections indicate that 10 to 15% of doctors are expected to retire within the next five years. The PS-M emphasizes that this planning is crucial for preparing the move to the new hospital, ensuring healthcare continuity, and addressing issues like social discharges.
PS-M leader Célia Pessegueiro noted that despite claims of 100% family doctor coverage, about 20% of registered individuals lack an assigned doctor. Discussions with the Order of Physicians also covered the implementation of the full-time dedication regime and the expansion of screening programs, such as lung cancer screening.
