The president of PS-Madeira, Célia Pessegueiro, advocated for an increase in the price paid to banana producers by the Regional Government, considering GESBA's profits.
During a visit to the Regional Banana Exhibition in Madalena do Mar, Pessegueiro highlighted that without the producers, GESBA would not achieve its current turnover of approximately 30 million euros, of which only 15 million is paid to farmers.
The socialist party noted that their interventions have led to a slight increase in the price of extra bananas and in GESBA's profit distribution. However, they warn that without the 36-cent European subsidy, the price paid for bananas would be lower than twenty years ago.
PS-Madeira is also urging the Regional Government to follow the Competition Authority's recommendations, specifically allowing farmers to join GESBA's social bodies with voting rights and ensuring freedom of association, with rules more proportionate to Madeira's market.
