The President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque, announced that Madeira could start producing limpets in a controlled environment within two years. This initiative follows promising trials conducted by the Calheta Mariculture Centre.
Current work focuses on optimizing the species' reproduction processes. The goal is to create conditions for entrepreneurs to develop an industry dedicated to the production of this mollusc, highly appreciated in the region.
Albuquerque also highlighted the recovery of the limpet stock, which allowed for the reopening of harvesting. Currently, limpet sales have already exceeded 35 tons, valued at over half a million euros, representing a 55% increase in value.
