Members of the Socialist Party have introduced a motion of praise in the Legislative Assembly of Madeira for entities and professionals involved in combating drug trafficking in the region. The initiative coincides with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, established by the United Nations to raise awareness about preventing, combating, and eradicating issues related to the use and trafficking of illicit substances.
Marta Freitas, a Socialist Party deputy, highlighted recent operations such as "Azul 2.0," which dismantled a cocaine trafficking route in the Atlantic, leading to the seizure of over 465 kg of cocaine and other substances. She also warned about the rise in synthetic drug and new psychoactive substance trafficking and use in the region, with approximately 200 annual hospitalizations linked to drug consumption, necessitating a coordinated response in prevention, treatment, and social reintegration.
