The Public Security Police (PSP) has warned of a new scam circulating on Madeira Island involving the sending of fake bank cards. The scam, initially flagged by the Bank of Portugal, uses highly personalized letters that include the victim's name, address, and even the real banking institution to create a sense of legitimacy.
The letters create a false sense of urgency, threatening account blocking if the new card is not activated immediately. To do so, they ask the victim to access a link or scan a QR code. By following these instructions, users are redirected to a fake page designed to steal bank credentials and money.
The PSP advises ignoring any urgency communicated in these letters, as activating legitimate cards does not require immediate action under threat. It is recommended to use only official channels for activation, such as ATMs, official online banking, or the bank's certified app, and to contact the bank directly if in doubt.
