Almost a year after the announcement of a new athletics track for Funchal, the timelines for its completion at the Regimento de Guarnição n.º 3 (RG3) facilities remain unknown.
Independent councillors Luís Filipe Santos and Jorge Afonso Freitas will bring the matter to the City Council meeting. They seek to ascertain if the protocol, intended to involve the municipality, the Regional Government, and the Portuguese Army, has been signed and when the project might proceed. The commitment was publicly made in September 2025, aiming to provide the municipality with an approved athletics track for shared use by athletes, the public, and military forces.
The councillors emphasize the importance of the investment for athletics in Funchal but argue that athletes, clubs, and the public deserve an update on a public commitment. They question whether the protocol has been signed and, if not, what steps have been taken and what is the schedule for the track's construction.
