The Representative of the Republic for Madeira, Paulo Barreto, celebrated the 33rd anniversary of Garrison Regiment No. 3 (RG3), emphasizing its role in defending democracy, international missions, and supporting the population during calamities.
Barreto recalled Madeira's military history, invoking the former Infantry Battalion No. 19 and the contribution of soldiers to the Restoration of Democracy. He also highlighted RG3's current operational capabilities, including drone usage, military engineering, and its deployment in Romania, with the capacity to integrate NATO, EU, and UN missions.
RG3 also serves as a "haven" during emergencies, having sheltered hundreds during the February 20, 2010 floods, the 2012 and 2016 fires, and the COVID-19 pandemic. The unit, the only military one in the Madeira Military Zone, was honored ten years ago with the title of Honorary Member of the Order of Merit.
