Rua dos Aranhas in Funchal: The story of a lost street sign and an altered name

Rua dos Aranhas in Funchal, once stretching from Rua da Carreira to Rua das Fontes, now has a different route and a street sign that has undergone changes.

Rua dos Aranhas, located in the center of Funchal, begins at Avenida Arriaga and ends at Rua da Carreira, measuring 243 meters in total length. Originally, its name honored the Aranha family, who were in Madeira in the 16th century.

In the past, the street was longer, extending from Rua da Carreira to Rua das Fontes. It was once called Rua Dr. Chaves, in honor of Manuel Figueira Chaves. However, in 1980, part of its route disappeared to make way for the construction of the Edifício Infante.

Recently, the street sign for Rua dos Aranhas, located on the building of the current Cristóvão Colombo Professional School, drew attention. The sign, which was once painted with the name "Rua das Aranhas," was recovered by the Municipal Council. Currently, the street's end is only indicated by GPS.
