The Mayor of Santana Municipality, Dinarte Fernandes, accused PSD councilor António Jorge Azevedo of "hypocrisy" for criticizing a phrase printed on the official cups of the Madeira Agricultural and Balladeer Festival (FARM).
Fernandes explained the expression is a "joke" and a "popular phrase" used humorously within the context of an agricultural festival, denying any intent to encourage alcohol consumption. The cups, manufactured in Spain, were already produced when the objection arose, and discarding three thousand items would be a greater waste.
In response to the criticism, the mayor pointed to the participation of the Mayor of Câmara de Lobos, Celso Bettencourt (PSD), and the president of IVBAM in a dry wine tasting event during the recent Grape Harvest Festival. Fernandes deemed it "hypocrisy" to judge the cup slogan as "the phrase of all evils of alcoholism" while events like rapid wine-drinking competitions take place.
