The Funchal City Council has commenced the second phase of conservation and restoration work on the Monument in Homage 'To the Dead of the Great War 1914-1918', located on Avenida do Mar e das Comunidades Madeirenses.
The initial phase focused on general cleaning and conservation of the sculpture. The municipality is now proceeding with a more in-depth intervention to restore and enhance this monument commemorating World War I in Madeira. The current works involve cleaning and treating the stone base, conserving the metal chains, cleaning commemorative plaques and inscriptions, and repairing the cross at the top. Structural interventions are also planned to ensure the monument's stability and safety.
This project is part of the municipal strategy to safeguard historical and cultural heritage. Protective measures and signage will remain in place around the monument to ensure pedestrian safety and minimize disruptions. Inaugurated in 1952, the monument was created by Madeiran sculptor Francisco Franco and honors the islanders who participated in World War I, symbolizing remembrance and recognition for their contribution and sacrifice.
