In August 2026, the Madeira Employment Institute (IEM) registered 4,871 unemployed individuals, a 10.5% decrease compared to the same month last year. The services sector accounted for the largest share of job seekers, at 86% of the total.
Industry, energy, water, and construction represented 11.6% of the unemployed, while agriculture and fishing comprised only 2.3%. Data also shows that 54.9% of the unemployed are women and 45.1% are men.
Young people under 25 constitute 14.2% of registrants, while 85.8% are 25 years or older. Approximately 39.3% of the unemployed have been registered for at least one year. In August, job market integrations fell by 20.4% compared to July, totaling 336.
