SPEA-BirdLife Madeira, through the LIFE Natura@night project, is seeking volunteers for its marine bird rescue campaigns. From mid-October, young Cory's shearwaters begin their ocean journey, but light pollution can disorient them, causing them to fall onto roads or near buildings.
Between October 23 and November 5, night patrols will cover the eastern side of the island, from Câmara de Lobos to São Jorge, searching for disoriented birds to safely release them at sea. Participation includes specialized training in nature conservation, insurance, and a certificate. Since 2022, 388 volunteers have joined this initiative.
The organization also urges citizens and institutions to spread awareness or adopt good outdoor lighting practices. If you find a disoriented marine bird, contact the SOS Wildlife Network.
