State to fund up to 80% of electric cars for low-income families

The government will cover up to 80% of electric car purchases for lower-income families, a measure criticised over charging access.

The Portuguese state has announced it will help the most disadvantaged families buy electric vehicles, covering up to 80% of the price.

The scheme has drawn criticism, particularly over whether these households can realistically charge the cars. Concerns include the lack of private garages or home charging points and the limited availability of public chargers.

It remains unclear how the remaining 20%, along with insurance, taxes and electricity costs, will be met by beneficiaries.
