Super Typhoon Bavi, registering winds of up to 230 kilometers per hour, has entered the Philippines' monitoring zone. The storm was approaching Luzon, the most populous island in the archipelago, where Manila is located.
Philippine authorities have warned of possible heavy rains in Luzon and other central areas. The Coast Guard has declared a maximum alert and is preparing plans for the evacuation of residents from high-risk coastal areas.
Bavi, a Category 5 typhoon, previously hit Rota island in the Northern Marianas, bringing gusts of up to 290 km/h and waves of 7.6 meters. Tens of thousands of residents lost electricity. Bavi is forecast to head towards southern Japan and northern Taiwan.
