The Madeira Teachers' Union (SPM) believes this year's teacher placement process reveals a "severe shortage" of teachers and educators in the Region.
Francisco Oliveira, SPM coordinator, stated at a press conference that only 216 teachers were placed, compared to over 400 last year. He recalled that the regional education secretary had indicated on August 7th the need to hire between 450 and 500 teachers.
According to the union representative, over 200 teachers have left the regional system, including 57 who accepted placements on the mainland, arguing that "over 550 hired teachers" would be necessary. The SPM also criticizes the situation of tenured teachers left without placement on the first list, deeming it "unacceptable" for teachers with over 20 years of experience to face "insecurity and precariousness."
