Madeira's Youth ADN (JAD) is questioning the Regional Government about the island's level of preparedness to face extreme weather phenomena, such as intense rainfall, flash floods, debris flows, and landslides. The organization seeks clarification on the capacity of current prevention, alert, and response systems.
JAD leader Tomás Carvalho conveyed the organization's position, which emerged from an event hosted by PAN in Funchal discussing climate change. JAD clarifies that their inquiry does not assume Madeira lacks civil protection resources, but rather aims to assess their sufficiency.
The organization notes that the Regional Government itself has prioritized prevention and resilience. Citing projections from the Madeira Climate Observatory, JAD highlights an expected worsening of extreme precipitation events between 2021 and 2050, with an estimated increase in frequency of 22% to 49%.
For JAD, climate policy must translate into concrete measures for prevention, territorial planning, and effective alert systems, questioning whether Madeira is sufficiently prepared and which vulnerabilities remain unresolved.
