A European safety testing campaign involving 25 bicycle child seats found that 68% of the analyzed products had failures. The main problems detected were with the quality of the harnesses and retention systems, as well as the strength and durability of the seats.
Nearly half of the failed products also had sharp edges or protrusions that could cause injuries or snag clothing and hair. The tests, conducted across ten EU countries, included front and rear-mounted models for children up to 15 kilograms. Products purchased online showed a significantly higher failure rate (85%) compared to those bought in physical stores (50%).
Following these results, some authorities have already recalled products, removed others from the market, and imposed sanctions. The campaign builds on a 2019 initiative where all tested products failed. Consumers are advised to always check suitability for the child's weight and height, compatibility with the bicycle, and the quality of the retention system before purchasing.
