Addictions are no longer limited to the consumption of illicit substances, now also encompassing alcohol, new psychoactive substances, gambling, online betting, and technology use. The warning came from Brother João Paulo, head of the Casa de Saúde São João de Deus, at the opening of the VI Convention on Addictive Behaviors and Dependencies of Madeira and the II Convention of Macaronesia.
In his address, he highlighted the importance of the Regional Strategy for the Prevention and Reduction of Addictive Behaviors and Dependencies 2026-2030 and advocated for strengthened cooperation among the Macaronesian regions (Madeira, Azores, Canary Islands, and Cape Verde).
Brother João Paulo pointed out the challenges posed by island status, such as geographical dispersion and stigma in small communities, but believes that proximity between institutions can help strengthen support networks. He called for coordinated interventions across health, social protection, housing, employment, and justice sectors to ensure sustainable reintegration.
