As of midnight today, the maintenance of the Via Rápida (VR1) expressway between Ribeira Brava and Machico is now the responsibility of Ascendi.
The Porto-based business group won a public tender for the Operation and Maintenance of the VR1, ending 26 years of service by Vialitoral. Operations in Madeira will be handled by AIGIH Madeira, A.C.E., an entity based in Funchal focused on managing land transport infrastructure.
The contract is valued at approximately 47 million euros, plus VAT, for a term of 49 months, with possible extensions. Ascendi will absorb all Vialitoral staff, and signage on the expressway was updated overnight.
