Major-General Lopes Garcia, the newly appointed Operational Commander of Madeira, said efforts are under way to update Air Force assets in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
During a courtesy visit to the Republic's Representative for Madeira, Irineu Barreto, at the Palácio de São Lourenço, the commander said his work would be one of continuity, stressing that "there cannot be ruptures." He also pointed to recent reinforcements of material, equipment and personnel across the services.
He explained that any decision on new Air Force assets rests with each branch rather than with the Operational Command. A joint exercise with the Regional Civil Protection Service is planned for mid-November.
