Madeira's Regional Government President, Miguel Albuquerque, has expressed support for the new tenancy regime approved by the Council of Ministers, calling it "a good measure." Albuquerque believes that enabling administrative procedures to remove non-compliant tenants could significantly boost the housing supply on the island.
Albuquerque stated this is a solution he has long advocated for, citing that many properties remain off the rental market due to the difficulties and delays associated with eviction processes. He argued that faster procedures would reduce financial losses for property owners and foster a more "open and liberal" rental market, benefiting young couples and others seeking housing.
The Madeiran executive leader also suggested that a more active rental market could lessen the burden on public housing investments. The region has already invested over 180 million euros in public housing, and Albuquerque sees the opening of the rental market as a way to address housing challenges, particularly for young people.
