Alcohol is identified as the main public health problem in Madeira, according to psychiatrist Luís Filipe. The statement was made on the sidelines of the VI Convention on Addictive Behaviors and Dependencies of Madeira.
The specialist also expressed concern about new psychoactive substances, which can cause acute and severe psychiatric disturbances, sometimes irreversible, from the first use. Dependencies related to the Internet and social media are another growing concern, with artificial intelligence being pointed out as a factor that can enhance consumption.
Luís Filipe advocated for an approach that considers economic, professional, family, and housing factors, in addition to substance treatment, to reduce the risk of relapse. The psychiatrist also suggested that the prohibition of new drugs should cover groups of substances rather than individual compounds.
